Snoring and fatigue may not seem like dental topics. Yet dentists and hygienists routinely see structures and patterns that can prompt useful questions about sleep and breathing.
Tooth wear, clenching, dry mouth on waking, a crowded airway, or difficulty tolerating dental procedures do not diagnose obstructive sleep apnea. They can, however, signal that a medical sleep evaluation is worth discussing.
Why Sleep Apnea Requires a Medical Diagnosis
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep. Symptoms can include loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, morning headaches, poor concentration, and excessive daytime sleepiness.
These symptoms overlap with other conditions. A physician-led evaluation and an appropriate sleep test are needed to diagnose apnea and determine its severity.
Where Dentistry Fits
Dental professionals may be the first to connect oral findings with the patient’s sleep history. We can ask focused questions, document wear and jaw symptoms, and coordinate with a physician.
For some adults with diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, a custom oral appliance may be recommended. These appliances hold the lower jaw in a position intended to help keep the airway open. They are not interchangeable with ordinary nightguards, and they require careful fitting and follow-up.
Why Follow-Up Matters
An oral appliance can affect the teeth, bite, muscles, and jaw joints. Qualified dental oversight helps monitor fit, comfort, side effects, and long-term changes. Sleep testing may also be used to confirm that the therapy is controlling the breathing problem.
The best device is not simply the least expensive or hardest to break. It is the one selected for the right patient, adjusted appropriately, and verified as effective.
Begin With the Right Questions
Tell your dentist if you snore, wake with a dry mouth, feel unrefreshed despite enough time in bed, or have already been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Also mention whether you use CPAP and how consistently you can tolerate it.
