Inside Tanglewood Dental Associate's Expanded Office: Comfort, Privacy, and Modern Care

Dr. Lawnin

For more than 65 years, Tanglewood Dental Associates has cared for generations of Houston families. Over that time, dentistry has changed dramatically. The tools are more precise, the technology is more digital, and the patient experience can be far more comfortable than many people expect from a dental visit.

That change is a major reason behind Tanglewood Dental’s expansion.

After 17 years in the old space, the team saw an opportunity to build an office around the way modern dentistry actually works: more in-house technology, more thoughtful patient flow, more private consultation space, and a calmer environment for patients who may be spending more time in the office during larger restorative or cosmetic treatment.

As Dr. Lawnin explained, the goal is not simply to make the office bigger. It is to create a space that supports better dentistry and a better patient experience.

Why the Office Is Expanding

The expansion is rooted in three core goals: growth, technology, and comfort.

As the practice continues to grow, the team needs more room to serve patients well. That includes space for additional providers, more advanced equipment, and better clinical workflow.

But the deeper reason is that dentistry itself is changing. Digital tools now play a larger role in diagnosis, planning, restorations, and same-day or in-house workflows. To support that kind of care, a dental office needs the right infrastructure behind the scenes: networking, Wi-Fi, electrical capacity, plumbing, lab space, milling units, 3D printers, and carefully designed operatories.

Patients may not see all of that infrastructure when they walk in, but they feel the difference when the experience is smoother, more comfortable, and more efficient.

Designed Around the Patient Experience

One of the biggest priorities for the new space is patient comfort.

In the past, many dental appointments followed a familiar pattern. For example, a crown often required preparation, a temporary restoration, an outside lab impression, and a second visit weeks later to place the final crown.

Today, more of that process can happen in-house. That is a major advantage, but it can also create natural downtime while digital equipment, milling units, or ovens are working.

The new office is designed with that reality in mind. Patients who want to remain in the treatment room can do so. Patients who would rather step away, sit comfortably, answer emails, relax, or enjoy a quieter space will have that option too.

The vision is warmer than a traditional waiting room. Dr. Lawnin described it as more of “a nice hotel lobby” than a cold, clinical dental office.

That distinction matters. Many patients, especially those considering larger restorative or cosmetic treatment, want time, privacy, and calm. The new space is built to support that.

More Privacy for Conversations and Treatment Planning

Another meaningful part of the expansion is the addition of private consultation spaces.

Not every important dental conversation should happen chairside. When patients are discussing larger treatment plans, restorative needs, cosmetic goals, timing, or investment, it helps to sit in a comfortable space where the focus is on conversation rather than procedure.

The new consultation areas are built to feel more like a living room than a treatment room. This gives patients a quieter, more private environment to ask questions, understand options, and make confident decisions.

For patients who value trust, education, and a non-sales approach, this kind of space supports a better decision-making process. It allows treatment planning to feel collaborative and thoughtful instead of rushed.

A Better Environment for Different Comfort Needs

Every patient experiences dental care differently.

Some people feel more comfortable when they can hear the natural rhythm of the office around them. Others prefer a quieter, more private space, especially during surgical procedures, sedation appointments, or larger restorative cases.

The new office is designed with both types of patients in mind.

A few suites will be more enclosed, offering added privacy and reduced noise. These rooms can be especially helpful for patients with dental anxiety, patients undergoing longer appointments, or those who simply prefer a more peaceful environment.

This is part of a larger shift in dentistry: creating care environments that feel less one-size-fits-all and more responsive to the person in the chair.

Expanding the In-House Lab and Digital Technology

Tanglewood Dental Associates already uses an in-house lab, and the expansion will allow that space to grow.

The larger lab area will support more 3D printers, better milling units, and additional digital tools as the practice continues to evolve. It will also make parts of the process more visible and understandable for patients.

For many patients, the technology behind modern dentistry can feel invisible. They see the final crown, veneer, restoration, or aligner plan, but they may not see the planning, printing, milling, refining, and quality control that happens along the way.

A more robust in-house lab helps bring that work closer to the patient experience. It also supports the practice’s focus on natural-looking, functional, long-lasting dentistry.

What Patients May Not Realize About Building a Dental Office

One of the most interesting insights from the construction update is how complex it is to build a dental office.

From the outside, a finished dental office may look like any polished professional space: nice floors, a front desk, comfortable seating, and treatment rooms. But behind the walls and above the ceiling, there is an extraordinary amount of infrastructure.

A dental office requires extensive plumbing, suction systems, electrical wiring, ventilation, networking, and equipment coordination. Dr. Lawnin compared building a dental office to building a restaurant because both require far more infrastructure than a typical office buildout.

That complexity is even greater in this project because the office is located on the eighth floor. The team had to account for concrete flooring, structural beams, and core drilling for plumbing. Some locations had to remain flexible so the design could adapt to the realities of the building.

Because the team planned for those possibilities early, they have been able to adjust without losing the overall vision.

A Space That Reflects the Practice Culture

Beyond the technology and construction details, the new office is meant to reflect the culture of Tanglewood Dental Associates.

The goal is a space that feels relaxed, welcoming, and personal. A place where patients and team members feel comfortable spending time. A place that shows the practice’s personality while still supporting precise, advanced dental care.

That balance is important. Technology should improve the experience without making it feel automated or impersonal. A modern dental office can be highly digital and still feel warm, human, and calm.

That is the heart of this expansion: dentistry that is more advanced, but also more comfortable.

What This Means for Patients

For existing patients, the new space should still feel familiar. The relationships, care philosophy, and trust-based approach remain the same.

The difference is in the details: more room, better flow, expanded technology, quieter spaces, private consultation areas, and a more comfortable environment during longer appointments.

For new patients, the space will offer a clear introduction to how Tanglewood Dental Associates approaches care: thoughtfully, conservatively, and with attention to both clinical quality and patient experience.

Whether someone is coming in for routine care, Invisalign, cosmetic bonding, veneers, crowns, or a larger restorative plan, the new space is being built to support a smoother and more personal experience.

Your Next Step

The Tanglewood Dental Associates expansion is about more than construction. It is about building an office around the future of dentistry: digital tools, in-house capabilities, private conversations, and a more comfortable visit from start to finish.

If you are considering care with Tanglewood Dental Associates, this is a meaningful time to learn more about the practice’s approach to thoughtful, natural-looking, long-lasting dentistry.
