What Is Smile Width and How Should It Fit Your Face

Dr. Lawnin

Some smiles show more teeth toward the cheeks; others leave more dark space at the corners. This is often described as smile width or the buccal corridor. The right amount is not a universal number. It depends on the face surrounding the smile.

Smile width is more than a tooth count

When someone smiles, the visible teeth extend toward the cheeks, with varying amounts of dark space at the corners. Dentists call those side spaces buccal corridors.

Showing more teeth is not automatically better. A width that suits one face may feel exaggerated or constricted in another.

The eyes and face create context

Perceived smile width relates to facial width, eye position, lip movement, and the dental arch. That is why a rule such as showing teeth to a particular premolar cannot be applied identically to every patient.

The smile should feel proportionate to the full face, not optimized as a close-up of the mouth.

Balance matters more than maximum width

A pronounced difference between the left and right sides can make a smile look lopsided. The cause may be tooth position, arch form, missing or rotated teeth, lip movement, or the angle of the photograph.

Before treatment, the dentist needs to identify which factor is actually changeable.

How treatment may change width

Invisalign may broaden or coordinate an arch within biological and functional limits, rotate teeth into view, and improve left-to-right balance. Restorations can influence the visible contour of selected teeth.

Neither option should be used to chase a generic wide-smile ideal. Roots, gums, bone, bite, and long-term stability set important boundaries.

A face-first evaluation

Full-face photographs and dynamic video show the smile at a realistic scale. Digital planning can then test whether proposed changes improve harmony or push the teeth too far beyond the facial frame.

The right smile width is the one that makes the teeth, lips, and face read as a coherent whole.
