Two Conditions With an Important Difference

Peri-implant mucositis is inflammation in the soft tissue around an implant without supporting bone loss. It may cause redness or bleeding and can often be reversed when detected and managed early.

Peri-implantitis includes inflammation and progressive loss of supporting bone. It is more difficult to treat and may require specialty care. The distinction cannot be made from symptoms alone.

What Your Hygienist Is Tracking

At maintenance visits, we evaluate tissue color and contour, bleeding, pocket measurements, plaque retention, access for cleaning, the design of the crown, and radiographic bone levels when indicated.

Change over time matters. Early remodeling after implant placement is not the same as ongoing bone loss. A stable measurement has a different meaning than a pocket that is deepening, bleeding repeatedly, or producing drainage.

Why Implant Design Affects Cleaning

The final crown needs to look natural, function correctly, and remain maintainable. Contours that are difficult to access can trap plaque and make home care challenging. That is one reason Tanglewood plans the final tooth first and positions the implant to support the restoration.

Risk Factors Still Count

A history of periodontal disease, poor plaque control, smoking, and diabetes can increase the risk of peri-implant disease. These factors do not guarantee failure, but they may change the recommended maintenance strategy.

Do Not Wait for Pain

Peri-implant disease can progress without obvious discomfort. Call if you notice bleeding, swelling, tenderness, a bad taste, drainage, or a change in the way the implant feels. Keep every recommended maintenance visit even when everything feels normal.
